Indiana Wesleyan University’s annual 5K Donut Run, returns to campus this weekend, April 22.
Campus Recreation Director, Adam Myers, collaborated with Jake Rupp (‘15), three years ago in bringing a 5K run to campus. The event started out as a coffee run, but was then changed to a donut run.
“We were looking for fun runs, and came across the Krispy Kreme Donut run, that’s how we got our idea” Myers said. “It went over so well that we decided to make that the annual event.”
In total, there were about 200 people who participated in the run last year.
This event will help to raise money to give to a nonprofit.
“Each year, we’ve selected a new non-profit for all of our events that we’ve had for our runs. We’ve given to St. Martin’s, United Way and this year will be Riley Hospital. We’ll donate to them, and they’ve given us some various raffle prizes to give away,” Myers said. “This year’s proceeds will specifically go to the hematology and oncology department.”
A student at Indiana Wesleyan, Mallory Tucker (jr), participated in the Donut Run with some of her closest friends last year.
“It was so much fun because I got to run it with one of my best friends,” Tucker said. “There were different checkpoints along the way where you get to stop and eat donuts which is really fun, and at the end you get a t-shirt and a medal so it was a great time.”
This year’s donuts will be from Poppy’s Xtreme Donuts. Poppy’s is prepared to make six donut holes for each runner as well as additional donuts for the volunteers.
The 5K Donut Run will begin 9:30 a.m. on the cross country course.
